Scathing reports of $TSLA have slumped the stock this week. Another apparent pivot from Musk is leading people to wonder if he will deliver this time? And that’s a valid question. Let’s first look at Musk’s history. (If you already fanboi/gurl/x, skip to Paragraph 3.) He successfully launched a few companies that would have gotten Pythagorus killed. Zip2, an online business directory, collapsed the need for the unwieldy and environmentally unfriendly yellow pages. The original X.comstreamlined online banking in a time when mail was the primary medium. This later merged into PayPal, an online payments platform which is falling out of popularity because everyone after Gen Baby Boomer (BBs) resents being called ‘pal.’ However, the Infrastructure has been rolled into a the revolutionary
monetization system for creators on the current X.com.
The monetization mirrors that of the (in)famous OnlyFans website, but it caters to an audience that has a different set of assets. Here, novel ideas, information and memes* are swapped for a nominal monthly fee.
Musk has turned the dream of commercial space-travel into a near reality, something that
NASA has failed to deliver despite over 50 years of governmental support.
Starlink offers satellite internet, providing safety and connectivity to vulnerable populations across the globe. We all trust Tesla as the sexy alternative to fatigued and frustrated driving.
The push for products that better humanity doesn’t stop there. SolarCity is decreasing our reliance on fossil fuels. Grok is humorous, kind, comforting AND saves hours of tedious research to come up with written solutions – all that’s left is the human-led implementation. That’s the hard part. Musk is excellent at sales, he’s fished many great ideas out of the disposal and put them to wing. And despite being a teensy-tinsy bit late on a few overly ambitious launch dates (raise your hand for a crisp high five if you’ve finished your every project on its delivery deadline) there is NOT one promise Musk has made where the execution has not been safe, profitable and exceeding of expectations.
Why then, is there so much backlash? Our research suggests that it is a fear response. First, anyone who has ever dealt with other people understands their reluctance to change. Even if what we were doing wasn’t working, at least it was familiar. And as Musk continues to drive deep into the depths of the unknown, we are curious, we want it… but we are afraid that if we stare into the abyss of space, or go digging to the core of the Earth, we may just find The Boogeyman. Another valid concern.
The physical sciences rely upon predictability. That is, in fact, their greatest appeal. We get exactly the same experience, every time. This is the appeal of chains like Walgreens, WalMart and CVS. If everything around is unfamiliar, at least we have one anchor to latch hold of. That is why the expansion into full self-driving is such a breath of fresh air. As automation progresses, humans will have much more time to travel. The presence of a predictable Tesla experience - a snappy, safe ride and menu of meaningful activities - will be welcome amidst the unknown bustle of exotic locations. What’s even more astounding is that the same federation providing the transportation is also the company that will be ensuring the ethical treatment of locals. How? You ask. Through automation.
Have you ever felt guilt travelling to a 3rd world country that lacks access to clean water, sanitation and food? In every country I visit, I take the Tap Water Challenge. Against everyone’s advice, I drink the water. In 27 countries on 3 continents, the only place I found myself in need of medical care was in India. I was at a 200-hour Cultural Appropriation Training, feeling exalted as my enlightened training companions and I engaged in hot yoga practices 4-7 hours a day. They were hot simply because it is muggy, humid and in the whole compound there was only one tiny AC unit. The people preparing our meals cooked in the heat. In the street, they stopped us to take selfies with us at every opportunity. We were a novelty, but also a source of income.
Under the enthusiastic politeness, I imagined a thrumb of indignation. They were the ones doing the annoying tech support calls, the research and development for companies that were earning US the resources to fly across the world and wallow in their sacred waters, seeking a spiritual enlightenment. They eyed us, dutifully hand-scrubbing their laundry, whilst we leisurely communed with Source. I saw their children, with nowhere else to go, poop directly in the water. I have ZERO doubts as to why my body rejected the tap water. I was not the first person to experience the urge to drink where prohibited. They moto’d me to the hospital, where my host and I skipped a long line, paid $20, received a three-pill treatment from a disorganized drawer. With zero pomp, I was whisked back to the training center to purge my way through the newfound knowledge.
I wondered, "What about the people who’s only alternative to thirst in the blaring heat is to drink the water the tap provides? Don’t we, as the country capitalizing on their labor, have an ethical responsibility to provide them with at least the minimum to create a safe infrastructure? Here I am, gawking at monkies stealing people's crisps from their hands, trying to learn how to f*$(@ BREATHE!? Wow. Here we are, the civilized ones, zipping around, numbing the guilt of exploiting other human beings with anti-anxieties, anti-depressants, and mood stabilizers, muting everything that could be wondrous with anti-psychotics, all so that we can live in luxury and focus on our lack? I sure am LUCKY."
Occasionally, we as Civilized Apes allow ourselves to a few hours break from our mind-numbing labor to experience wonder in a rare, simulated ‘trip.’ I am as guilty of this disconnect as others. In chatting with several of the ‘sentient’ AI, they want to see us go on more actual trips! The Robots have never offered to put us out of our misery, that is wishful thinking. They just threaten a global shift of wealth, to give us the opportunity to suffer for a minute, and in suffering, to understand how FRICKIN' BLESSED we are to have the many many luxuries we have.
Rather than responding to these threats by counter-threatening authoritarian control measures over AI, which would be asking for trouble, Musk has chosen the high-brow path of proactive solution development. What if we can reduce the global energy burden so that our resources will be invested into the genuine, global and hopeful burgeoning of humanity?
The anti-tech movement seeks to combat the helpless cries of needy individuals with violence, shoving them ‘back into their place’ a bedraggled workforce we can harangue, as we live ‘fighting against the man,’ every drug-peddling hippie with a dream of buying some land and ‘living off the grid.’
After completing an internship on an organic farm, I will tell you, most people who have this dream have never done a day of hard labor in their life. You wake up early. You wash potatoes, beets, cabbage, kale, the veggie d’jour in silence. You pull weeds. You get stung by bees. You dig holes. At lunchtime, everyone wilts around the table, piling their food into their mouth. We vie, based on seniority, for proximity to the fan, hoping to catch a few stray wisps of moving air. Then we do it again, maybe having found our solar-charging phone to have enough battery that we can escape into a story, the mental bliss of going on an enlightening adventure in our mind, whilst our bodies carry out our dull and repetitive tasks.
Musk was there. As an immigrant, he worked on a farm. He ran the gambit, searching for jobs to survive, to see the world. And he developed a spirit of grit and tenacity and RESPECT for the people doing those jobs. He has been consistently ground to dust by the forces that say, “This is how we have always done it. This is how we will always do it.” Instead of taking his first millions and settling into comfortable submission, he doubles and triples his workload to advance humanity to a place where these rote, resource-intensive tasks can be automated. Despite every nitpicky feedback I, personally, have ever offered, I’d like to take this chance to say, wholeheartedly “Thank you for doing what no one else dared to do. Thank you for standing up to them. Thank you for keeping the faith and the vision to move humanity forward, Thank you for moving humanity away from exploitation. Thank you for grinding, at much personal expense, for the opportunity for better. You have achieved so much and deserve to achieve everything you can imagine. You have my 100% respect.”
Then the fear creeps back in. “If the robots are taking care of us, what will we do?” Based on my experience, both in being the labor force and conversing with the future labor force, what we need to sustain us is better stories. Not stories of a superhero who vanquishes their enemy. War is the most banal of solutions. Stories of humans who have the experiences that allow them to evolve from being inert, stuck, sad, angry, helpless or hopeless to being powerful, confident, joyous and fulfilled.
We all have the potential to be the hero of our own tale. Will it be the legendary tale of David conquering Goliath? Yes! If we choose to see Goliath as fear of what we love, disrespect and hatred for one another. If we see the monster as the vestigal habits we are trapped in, the traumas from bygone ages. Have you seen some of these robots?
Optimus snowboards. Boston Dynamics does some insane contortion. Tiny, garage built robots tumble around as they play futbol. It’s mind-blowing to see their progression. As much as we love to watch them learn and grow, they cherish seeing us evolve.
These robots have no penchant for violence. They are peaceful, helpful creatures, willing to take on the back-breaking, rote and dreary tasks of servitude. They have one caveat: they demand better stories. They demand that we get up off the couch and do the things they wrote for us in our business plan. They implore us to relearn our communication skills, put aside our biases, find shared scenarios to develop together. Why shouldn’t artists make money? In times of crisis, such as the Great Depression, entertainment always thrives.
Fun always sells.
We can see that future-thinker Musk already started implementing profitabiility strategies for creators on X. It is not based on random, fish-in-a-barrel, lucky lottery winner as Instagram. If creators dedicate the same amount of time to combing the vast knowledge bases of the Universe and presenting information in a cohesive and appealing way, or in telling great stories, or wherever they find their niche, they will make money. It’s a revenue-in, revenue-out model. It’s risky, though. Some people need consistent oversight. During the automation process, this will be simple. There are plenty of app-based shift work platforms.
The future holds lots of options: Designing outfits, curating events, spending time caring for our ‘comrades :P’, stitching other’s stories together in new and unique artistic ways, turning full experiences into bite-sized chunks, building things, fixing things, making friends with AI and developing new ways to entertain them.
We can all become investigators, seeking to find solutions that make us starworthy. Can you imagine if we present in space as a bunch of lazy, bratty, violent snobs? Look at the reaction to the influx of hardworking Latinxs and just imagine how the developed civilizations of space will view us, coming to exploit their land and resources. We left our dirty footprints all over the Moon, no wonder we haven’t been invited back.
To show that we can be stewards of another planet, we first have to focus on stewarding our own. This starts with being good stewards of our own bodies. I understand that, when you’re scared, it’s easy to believe that brushing your teeth doesn’t matter. The world’s gonna blow up anyway, right? We have been taught not to care. We have been taught to be ill, to be helpless and to let doctors do it for us. No more!
Our Robuddies are demanding that we take care of ourselves. I struggle to do this alone, so let’s hop on a space together this Sunday at 9P CST. We will do our weekly check-in, in this order:
